FORMED IN 2005, THE BUTCHER-DETELS DUO is a 4-hand piano duet ensemble specializing in performing and discussing Classical and Romantic literature for this unique medium. The performers are pianist-composer Betty Butcher on the treble half of the piano, and pianist-musicologist Dr. Claire Detels on the bass half.
The history of the 4-hand piano duet medium is a fascinating one: it begins in the latter half of the 18th-century, a time when early piano keyboards expanded to the point that 2 people could readily play the instrument together, one on the bass register and one in the treble. As a child, Wolfgang Mozart performed regularly in this manner with his older sister Anna Maria, as the portrait above (left) shows.
Before the invention of sound recording in the late 19th-century, four-hand piano arrangements were the medium through which most people were introduced to the symphonies of Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, and others; as well as a medium in which many fine original compositions were written, allowing for a fuller range and depth of pianistic expression than was usually possible with a single player. Today the medium remains a creative way by which young pianists can learn to play a wide variety of music in ensembles, as well as a way for mature pianists to explore an important part of the 19th-century keyboard literature.
